When Virginia Tech joined the Big East in 1991…nobody realized that the formerly independent Gobblers would shed their nickname and take the world by storm. Conference titles, exciting players and tasty smoked turkey legs on the menu in Blacksburg. Special teams became the hallmark of those Hokie teams under the moniker “BEAMER BALL!”. And Lane Stadium rocked bigtime on Thursday nights.

Flash-forward to 2013...where the Hokies have been consistently uneven through four games that include consecutive one-possession victories over Conference USA teams. Logan Thomas has been somewhat ordinary when he hasn’t been downright dreadful running the offense. The kicking game has been far from special–from allowing a pair of kick returns for touchdowns against Alabama to missing multiple field goals against East Carolina and Marshall. The the school all of a sudden is not ready for prime time–dropping consecutive Thursday night games entering this evening’s tilt with Georgia Tech. And now they’re going from last week’s “Fall Foliage Camouflage” helmets to this evening’s “Limestone Cowboy” headgear. Who are these people?

Questions facing the Hokies– can the defense contain the Yellowjacket option offense? GT ranks 4th in the nation running the football (345 yards per game) and 10th in scoring. Virginia Tech does lead the ACC in stopping the run and limits teams to a league-best 2.6 yards per carry. Can Logan Thomas limit his mistakes and avoid another multi-turnover game (2 picks against Western Carolina and Marshall)? And will the kicking game deliver delight instead of despair? Brace yourselves, Blacksburg. Hokies get humbled, 27-20.

Last week: 7-0.
Overall: 21-3.
