This the month of our discontent.  Instead of dreaming of Oranges we’re hoping for Music Cities or…Belks?  This “Belk Bowl” being played in Charlotte December 27th makes me yearn for the Poulan Weedeater Bowl.  Five days into Closing Month, the three area ACC schools all find themselves on the precipice of postseason elimination.  Virginia Tech is 4-5 with #8 Florida State coming to Blacksburg this week.  Maryland is 4-5 on their 5th quarterback.  And Virginia is living in the land of no margin at 3-6.  I guess one can always dream about the Military Bowl.

Alma Mater Update– unless the Pinstripe Bowl is your 6-6 tie-in.  SU can only dream of winning six games as they face unbeaten Louisville and ready-for-non-SEC-opponent Missouri over the next few weeks.  Two losses and the game against Temple means nothing.  As opposed to other years when the game against the Owls is absolutely huge.

Maryland instead of torturing fans with a last second victory or defeat…ended all suspense early by falling behind 20-0 in the first half of their 33-13 loss to Georgia Tech.  While the Terps didn’t lose another quarterback, they did lose starting inside linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield.  Terrapin Triumphs– Shawn Petty after going 1-6 for 1 yard in the first half, went 8-12 for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns after halftime… Stefon Diggs caught two more touchdown passes…while defense and special teams each notched a fumble recovery.  Terrapin Troubles– the defense allowed 370 yards rushing… while the offense converted just 5 of 15 third down attempts.  Next Up:  Saturday at Clemson.

Virginia snapped a six game losing streak by routing North Carolina State 33-6.  But the Cavaliers dominance wasn’t the biggest surprise.  This Wolfpack team is the same one that upset Florida State last month?  Cavalier Congrats– Kevin Parks rushes for 115 yards and a touchdown…the defense forces 5 turnovers and notches 6 sacks while holding the Wolfpack to 19 yards rushing.  Cavalier Concerns– 4 of 17 on third down… and ten penalties for 72 yards will definitely be points of concern as UVa tries to make it two wins in a row.  Next Up:  Saturday vs Miami.
