Virginia Tech has a wonderful tailgating tradition at Lane Stadium– smoked turkey legs.  Turkey legs that take at least until the third quarter to finish…and stay with you longer than memories of the actual game.  Last night it wasn’t turkey legs on the menu… but turnovers as Logan Thomas tosses two interceptions and fumbles a snap in a 30-12 defeat at Miami.  While this doesn’t seal the VT’s fate, they’d need to win out and get help in order to reach the ACC Championship Game.  Hokie Highlights– Logan Thomas tallied 199 yards passing and 124 rushing (including a 73 yard scamper for a score)… the defense held the Hurricanes to 1 of 12 on third down… and forced five straight 3 & outs to start the second half.  Hokie Humblings– an interception in the red zone ended their first drive…and a lost snap ended a possession inside the Hurricane ten.  Special teams suffered a rough night:  a blocked punt set up Miami’s first TD and an 81 yard kickoff return set up the ‘Canes second TD… while Cody Journell missed an extra point and a 47 yard field goal.  Whatever happened to Beamer Ball?  Next Up:  Thursday against #9 Florida State.

Alma Mater Update– pessimism is always present in Orange Nation.  Last year the team followed up its biggest win of the season with a 5 game losing streak.  Now the team is 4-4 after rallying from 20 points down to nip South Florida– but the corresponding cold shower begins with a Cincinnati team that is nine points away from being unbeaten.   After watching Ryan Nassib for 60 minutes– I now get why scouts like him.  He threw more than a few darts against South Florida… and although he mixes in a lot of questionable decisions and superfluous slides, NFLers love upside.  Like how bleu cheese dressing makes any buffalo wing better (speaking of great wings, still no 44-wing salute at Sign of the Whale).

Maryland vs Georgia Tech– the Terps once hopeful season has been dealt a pair of heartbreaking losses against beatable teams and three season-ending injuries to quarterbacks in that time.  Converted linebacker Shawn Petty (wearing #31) will be backed up fellow freshman Brian McMahon (the tight end wears #87).  How much will Petty be able to digest and execute?  Meanwhile, the defense will have its hands full with the 4th best running attack in the nation.  How quickly the D can get up to speed on matching up with the Yellowjackets speed will be key;  last year the Terps allowed 21 points in the first 33 minutes before shutting out Tevin Washington and company for the rest of the game.  Terrapins lose both quarterbacks to pulled hangnails after a 24-14 defeat.

Virginia at North Carolina State–  the Cavaliers may be in full free-fall mode,  but they’ve come within one score in their last two losses.    Mike Glennon leads the ACC in passing at over 300 yards a game… and UVa is 11th in the league in defensive pass efficiency.  Kippy and Buffy look forward to visiting with Elmer and Louise– so much they’re bringing their own utensils plates… not to mention a bottle of 14 Hands cabernet.  Cavaliers come up short, 31-17.

Navy beats Florida Atlantic, Howard tops Hampton, James Madison beats Maine, Towson slips to Delaware, William & Mary loses at New Hampshire, Richmond routs Rhode Island.

Last Night: 0-1.  Thanks Hokies, for taking me with you on your slide from relevance to obscurity.

Last Week: 2-5 wraps up a disappointing moving month.

Overall: 47-25.
