Past is present in the ACC this weekend… as the two schools known as “football first” in a basketball league battle.  While #4 Florida State dominated the league by posting 12 titles in its first 16 years as a competing member, #10 Clemson actually has the most overall championships (14) in the history of the ACC.  That these are the last two unbeatens isn’t a shock as much as the fact that they’re the only unbeatens after just three weeks into the schedule.  But that’s what you get in a conference where most of the membership doesn’t wake up until October 15.

Alma Mater Update– the Orange visit Minnesota in search for a second straight win.  This is an SU team that had to rally past Stonybrook and one that surrendered 42 points to NORTHWESTERN.  Come to think of it, I’m looking forward to October 15 as well.  Hopefully the Sign of the Whale has added the “44 wing salute” to the menu.

Maryland at #8 West Virginia– quite an offensive upgrade from William & Mary, Temple and UConn…the Mountaineers rank 2nd in passing and 4th in scoring.  Their “Air-Raid” offense will pose plenty of problems for the Terps D– Geno Smith is completing 88% of his passes.  Meanwhile, an offense with true freshmen starting at quarterback, runningback and wide receiver will face a crazy crowd in Morgantown.  Terps tumble, 44-18.

Virginia at #17 TCU– the Horned Frogs are in their first season of Big 12 play… after spending time in Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference due to the Southwest Conference’s breakup.  Once one’s head stops spinning the realization is that this team is as good or better than Georgia Tech… who put 56 points on the board against the Cavaliers last weekend.  My UVa tailgating buddies Kippy and Buffy are concerned that the noon kickoff means they won’t be able to get in much antiquing.  Cavaliers come up short, 36-10.

Virginia Tech vs Bowling Green– I have a special place in my heart for the Falcons because “Dave Preston” played for the Falcons in the mid-1970’s and led the MAC in rushing one year.  For the record there was also a “David Preston” on Guiding Light in the mid-80’s (he was killed off at Mindy Lewis’ wedding).  After getting upset (and throttled) at Pitt, coach Frank Beamer’s bunch should bring it.  Hokies blast BG, 34-12.

Navy beats VMI, James Madison rips Rhode Island, William & Mary loses to Delaware, Towson gets by St Francis, Richmond routs Georgia State.

Last Week: 5-3.

Overall: 14-6.
