Whenever an upstart gets the upper hand against an established power, it’s easy to dismiss the upset as an isolated incident.  Back to back wins can be written off as the product of a charismatic coach.  Three straight wins can be traced to a dynamic player.  But four straight wins?  USC, there’s a new Pac-12 sheriff in town.  Even with Jim Harbaugh and Andrew Luck in the NFL, the Cardinal takes the Trojans out of the National Championship race before it even begins.  Now USC has a long-term advantage as a program over the Cardinal– but this illustrates that sharp recruiting and solid gameplans often trump name programs.

Alma Mater Update– the Orange gets its first win of the season… struggling past Stonybrook 28-17.  I’m glad the game wasn’t on TV… because I would have been pulling my eyeballs out.  I’m simply happy SU didn’t yield another 42 points.  I was prepared to swear off wings if they did– but with this defense I wasn’t prepared to put any promises in print.  The 44 wing salute awaits this Saturday when the Orange play at Minnesota.

Maryland came up short against UConn 24-21 in a game where neither team was able to move the football early on (10 of the first 19 possessions were 3 & out).  Terrapin Triumphs– Wes Brown rushes for 74 yards and a touchdown… Stefon Diggs caught his first TD pass and was electrifying every time he touched the ball…and Perry Hills threw and ran for scores.  Terrapin Troubles– the OL gave up six sacks… the defense after holding the Huskies in check for most of the day allowed a 10 play, 76 yard TD drive that would be the difference.  Next Up– Saturday at #8 West Virginia..

Virginia after keeping fans on the edges of their seats for 60 minutes against Penn State ended the suspense early in a 56-20 loss at Georgia Tech.  After allowing 33 points over the first two weeks, UVa coughs up 35 in the first halfCavalier Congrats–  Alec Vozenilek averaged 47.8 yards per punt… Phillip Sims threw for 2 scores in a mop-up role.  Cavalier Concerns– the defense allowed 461 yards rushing– and surrendered touchdowns on GT’s first four drives.  The offense until garbage time failed to gain move the chains on 7 of 10 possessions.  Next up– Saturday at #17 TCU.

#13 Virginia Tech posted its annual September slumber at 0-2 Pitt…stumbling 35-17.  Thanks for participating, Hokies… your consolation award of ACC Coastal Division awaits.  Hokie Highlights– Kyshoen Jarrett ran a punt 94 yards back for a score (BEAMERBALL!)… Marcus Davis notched 4 catches for 129 yards and a TD.  Hokie Humblings– four turnovers… a rather accommodating defense that coughed up 202 yards in the first quarter… a running game that managed just 59 yards. Next Up–Saturday vs Bowling Green.
