Okay, so we know the SEC rules the game with an iron fist.  But can wes just enjoy the early season success of another conference before being force fed another fall of how incredible the Southeastern Conference is?  Check out a Pac-12 that has talent up top (#2 USC) and THREE giant killers in UCLA, Oregon State and Arizona (each beating ranked teams Saturday).  This with an SEC springing leaks in Auburn and Arkansas.  Add into the equation that the Pac-12 divisions aren’t titled “Leaders & Legends” and the teams in the North are actually north of the teams in the South divisions (Missouri needs to be in the SEC West, folks).  But what I like about the league is they adapt with the times:  having a number that actually accurately represents current membership.

Alma Mater Update– Syracuse slips to 0-2 with a 42-29 loss to USC.  This was a game within reach in the fourth quarter… but a defense that has been rather accomodating allowed 3 more TD’s.  Ryan Nassib is a decent QB (albeit not great)… but he can’t keep pace with a defense that has gives up over 40 points a game.  SU takes on Toledo Saturday– and I hope to have my first helping of Sign of the Whale wings.

Maryland gave fans plenty to like and plenty to fear in their 36-27 victory over Temple.  So good in the first half… so scary after intermission.  Terrapin Triumphs– Perry Hills throws for 190 yards and 2 touchdowns while running for a third score.  Stefon Diggs tallies 135 total yards on 9 touches. The defense holds the Owls to 4-15 on third down.  And only 3 penalties.  Terrapin Troubles– what happened in that second half?  Temple trimmed at 23 point deficit to 2 in the fourth quarter.  Four fumbles will hurt you eventually. And 31 yards per punt isn’t doing you any favors in the field position game.  Next Up– Saturday vs UConn.

Virginia squeaked past Penn State 17-16… making one ask if you’d rather be lucky than good.  FOUR MISSED FIELD GOALS!  Add in a blocked extra point and you have the recipe for success…I guess.  Cavalier Congrats– 258 yards and 2 TDs passing for Michael Rocco… including the gamewinng strike to Jake McGee.  The defense held the Nittany Lions to under 50% passing.  Cavalier Concerns– 40 yards rushing from its thunder and lightning tandem… 10 penalties… and 4 turnovers.  And needing five misses by Penn State to win by one point.  Next Up– Saturday at Georgia Tech.

#15 Virginia Tech followed up an emotional overtime win over Georgia Tech by routing Austin Peay 42-7.  Turkey legs were served early and often in Blacksburg…and they avoid an easy to forsee letdown.  Hokie Highlights– BEAMER BALL! returned with a vengence…:  Kyshoen Jarrett’s 46 yard punt return led to VT’s first touchdown while Tony Gregory’s blocked punt set up another score.  Logan Thomas throws for 212 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions.  The defense allowed 78 yards on 7 first half possessions.  Hokie Humblings– nothing of note… just a nice all around effort.  Next Up– Saturday at Pitt.
